As a tank farm operator, you receive and discharge fuel from tanker truck shipments and pipelines. Your duties include taking a sample within a specified period to analyze product quality using various tests, such as measuring acidity and composition. You also inspect products based on compliance and standards set by your company, the industry, and the government.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (and other duties as assigned)

  1. Transfer products to storage tanks and ensure all equipment is up to code to avoid spills and contamination. 
  2. Maintain an organized log with all product transactions, quality control actions, and any maintenance performed.
  3. Inspect the hydrant system, tanks, and pipelines, and report anything unusual or outside your expertise to your supervisor, including leaks or temperature and pressure abnormalities.
  4. Assist in facility maintenance that includes tank cleaning and filter changes plus performs mechanical work on hydrant valves, boxes, painting, and duties of similar skill levels.
  5. Properly clean and use of materials that will not have an effect on personal wildlife or the environment.
  6. Proper use of equipment, which includes: 
  7. Atmospheric testing and monitoring equipment. 
  8. Ventilating equipment needed to obtain acceptable entry conditions.
  9. Communication equipment necessary to maintain contact with the standby person. 
  10. Personal protective equipment as needed. 
  11. Lighting equipment as needed. 
  12. Barriers and shields as needed. 
  13. Equipment, such as ladders, is needed for safe ingress and egress. 
  14. Rescue and emergency equipment as needed. 
  15. Any other equipment necessary for safe entry into and rescue from permit spaces.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  1. Strong knowledge, understanding, and sensitivity to the Inupiat culture.
  2. High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  3. Previous tank cleaning or spill cleanup is preferred but not mandatory.

CERTIFICATION(S) AND LICENSE(S) REQUIRED:

  1. 40-hour Hazwoper certificate required.
  2. Confined Space certificate required.
  3. First Aid and CPR preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively communicate information in 1 on 1 and small group situations to customers, coworkers, and/or supervisors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment is in a busy office, shop or outside setting.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, occasionally be exposed to wet or humid conditions, may frequently be exposed to extreme cold, and occasional exposed to extreme heat and may be required to travel in small and large commercial aircraft. The employee will work near moving mechanical parts, and high, precarious places. The employee will handle explosive materials such as pressurized gas & propane tanks. In addition, there is risk of electrical shock.  The noise level in the work environment is loud.
