The Retail Operations Manager leads, manages, and coordinates the activities of the Retail Operations Division (Convenience Stores) in support of policies, goals, and objectives established by Executive Management by performing the following duties personally, through the Retail Operations Supervisor, or subordinate managers.  The Retail Operation Manager must strive to Maximize Return on Investment, Drive Results, and support Targeted Growth & Reinvestment in accordance with Petro Star Inc Strategic Plan.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (and other duties as assigned)

  • Responsible for providing Management oversight for All Retail annual fuel sales, inside sales, and 40 to 50 Retail employees.
  • Guides and Leads the Retail Division employees to include the Retail Operations Supervisor (ROS), Store Managers, Assistant Managers and Crew in the Operations, Profit Controls, Sales Building/Promotions, and Employee Development (with emphasis on ASRC Shareholder Development) aspects of the organization's retail products and services.
  • Performs Division Optimization and equipment research, recommends Strategy, and selection of equipment purchases to increase income opportunities and enhance safety.   (Example: New Fuel Dispensers, Franchise opportunities, and Branded Fuel Sales, and Loyalty Programs.
  • This position facilitates Retail Marketing, and works with Maintenance Manager   to provide direction for all aspects of Store Operations.
  • Shares a monthly regular scheduled interval swap with Retail Operations Supervisor in being first responder to after-hours incidents to ensure ROS has a scheduled relief period each month of no less than 10 consecutive calendar days. 
  • The ROM is committed to providing Customer and Employee service that makes both internal and external Customers and Employees feel welcome, important, and appreciated.
  • Works with Safety Officer to ensure completion of all safety training necessary to comply with state and federal regulations required in the operations of the retail stores.  (These include specifically handling Food, Fuel, Hazardous Materials, Health and Sanitation/DEC, OSHA, Propane Dispensing, Robbery Deterrence, Customer Service, Inventory Loss and How to prevent it, Security and other related training aimed toward safety, controlling profits and building sales).
  • Prepares Retail Budgets, assists in preparation and presents short-term and long-range plans, capital improvement projects, AFE (IRR, NPV, and ROI) analysis, and budgeting based on corporate goals and growth objectives.
  • Be proficient with DM2 Computer Systems, C-Store Pro, and back office software in order to provide superior management support to subordinate employees to optimize business processes.
  • Evaluates the results of overall retail sales for Convenience Stores regularly, and reports these results to the Director of Sales and Operations.
  • Recommends fuel pricing strategy for the C-Stores with respect to competition to the Director of Sales and Operations and implements direction.
  • Prepares reports, feedback, and records relating to operational performance for subordinate management (PNL reviews), to ensure optimization strategies and future development.
  • Provide data metrics pulled from the back office reports for further Operations and Profit Control analysis.
  • Responsible to report, instruct, and provide support at Retail meetings.
  • Ensures that the responsibilities, authorities, and accountability of all direct subordinates are defined and understood (with emphasis on detailed position descriptions for all subordinates and ASRC Shareholder Manager Trainees).
  • Gives work directions, resolves problems, and sets deadlines to ensure timely completion of work.
  • Coordinates activities of Retail Division with related activities of other divisions to ensure efficiency and economy.
  • Negotiates with 25+ Retail Convenience Store Merchandise Vendors (i.e. Coca-Cola, Altria, McLane’s North West) on purchasing the product mix, merchandising, promotions, contracts, cost of goods sold, and rebates for merchandise sold in the stores (includes General Merchandise, Food & Food Franchises, Liquor, Tobacco, Movie Tickets, and Propane).
  • Responsible for maintaining vendor files and maintaining Pricebook to ensure target Margins are being applied and measured against actual results.
  • Establishes and enforces margin expectations with respect to merchandise sales to ensure gross profit objectives are being met.
  • Responds to all written and oral customer comments within scope of responsibility.
  • Supervises the overall inventory process and procedure for all departments within location, executing control processes when necessary.
  • May be asked to be a supporting role in Retail Managerial Short or turnover situations.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Strong knowledge, understanding and sensitivity to the Inupiaq culture.
  • This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a major in Management, Accounting, or Finance. Five or more years’ experience in Retail Operations Management, financial reporting and analysis, Leadership Training, and any additional retail training (National Association of Convenience Stores, NACS) a plus.
  • Strong Knowledge of technical and professional principles and skills of Leadership, Management, Human Resources, Accounting, and Finance.
  • Strong Knowledge of data processing capabilities and procedures, including the use of microcomputers with Mastery in Excel, Word, and Power Point.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative management style with Executive Management, co-workers, subordinates, and outside personnel.
  • Ability to communicate at a corporate level both orally, written, and presentation experience required with a wide range of people.
  • Excels at operating in a fast pace, community environment where decision making is required to be decisive.
  • Persuasive with details and facts.
  • Delegates a responsibility effectively, follows up on assignment, and ensures subordinates provide essential feedback.
  • High comfort level working in a diverse environment.
  • Must be able to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and may be required to sign a confidentiality agreement.
  • Ability and willingness to continue education, as necessary.
