The Outside Operator is an hourly position week on week off rotating work schedule reports directly to the shift Lead Operator.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (and other duties as assigned)

  • Responsible for monitoring, controlling and conducting activities that pertain to the safe operation of the refinery, taking corrective action when necessary to ensure that all conditions and operations are in compliance with safety, environmental and operating policies and procedures.
  • Outside operator one must be proficient in the outside operation of one of PSVR’s operating units and utilities.
  • Adhere to established health and safety procedures and programs.
  • Ensures rounds are completed in an effective and timely manner every day all day.
  • Participates in all of the training programs.
  • Improves his/her knowledge.
  • Is able to safely shut down and startup all units trained in.
  • Must know all emergency procedures associated with units they are trained on.
  • Must know and understand how to operate all equipment Heaters, pumps, and compressors within the unit they have been trained on.
  • Must know all process lineups.
  • Must know all exchangers, re-boilers and what purpose they serve to the process they have been trained on.
  • Must be able to hear distributed control system (DCS) alarms and fire alarms.
  • Must understand SOL/NOL Limits.


  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1+ years refining /chemical operations experience or equivalent.
  • The ability to work with fellow employees and customers with different personalities and traits, demonstrating good judgment and communication. 

Desired / Preferred:                                               

  • Process Technology Degree.


PSI is a drug-free workplace.  As such, you will be required to comply with PSI’s substance abuse policies.  This position will participate in DOT/PHMSA pre-employment and random drug testing.  If you have a CDL, this position will participate in DOT/FMCSA pre-employment and random drug testing in lieu of DOT/PHMSA.
