Under the general direction of the Director of Employee Relations & HRIS, this position is responsible for professional-level Human Resources services such as recruiting, employment, employee relations, training and development, benefits, and compensation in compliance with all state and federal regulations. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (and other duties as assigned)

  1. Under the direction of the Director of Employee Relations & HRIS, administer various human resources plans and procedures for personnel.
  2. Provide excellent customer service to both internal and external customers; act as an HR point-of-contact for company employees and some management level personnel. Know when it is necessary or appropriate to escalate managerial issues/situations to upper management and/or Senior Leadership within the HR Department.
  3. Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  4. Research and produce professional-level human resource reports in some or all the following areas: employee relations, affirmative action, drug and alcohol, and personnel. Under the guidance of HR leadership, investigate and resolve employee concerns.
  5. Recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures to effect continual improvements in the efficiency of departments and services performed.
  6. Perform leave audits.  Ensuring all necessary paperwork and processes have been completed.
  7. Participate in human resource meetings and other relevant meetings and facilitate employee training on human resource topics and employment policies. 
  8. Assist with all administrative tasks for onboarding and conduct new hire orientation.
  9. Review HR data entries and auditing for accuracy, assisting as needed.
  10. Provide excellent customer service to both internal and external customers; act as an HR point-of-contact for company employees and some management level personnel. Know when it is necessary or appropriate to escalate managerial issues/situations to upper management and/or Senior Leadership within the HR Department.
  11. Promote HR programs to create an efficient and conflict-free workplace.
  12. Assist in the communication and training on employment policies and assist with upkeep of the employee directory and organizational chart.
  13. Serve as an alternate for drug screening collections.
  14. Maintain employee files and records, performing audits as necessary.
  15. Maintain confidentiality of personnel records, reporting, and personnel information.
  16. Serve as a backup to the HR Generalist with the ability to perform all of the HR Generalists tasks.
  17. Assist with HR Management System enhancements and updates, as needed.
  18. Assist with recruiting events and efforts, as needed.
  19. Travel to job sites and events, as needed.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  1. Bachelors’ Degree or equivalent experience as a HR Generalist or similar role may substitute on a year for year basis.  
  2. Three (3) years of employee relations or other related HR experience with similar responsibility.
  3. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines for federal and state reporting, interpret and explain complex employment legal issues and demonstrated high-performance in employee relations is required.
  4. Experience working in or supporting operating companies in a shared services model.  
  5. A Professional Human Resources Certification is preferred.
  6. Strong working knowledge of federal and state employment law is required.
  7. A strong working knowledge of Oracle, Vista and/or Taleo applications is preferred or willingness and  ability to immediately learn the same is required.
  8. A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office is required and a strong working knowledge of Adobe Professional (and similar products) is preferred.
  9. Strong knowledge, understanding and sensitivity to the Inupiat culture is required or must be developed soon after hire.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as policies and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees or customers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

The work environment is in a busy office setting.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and may be required to travel in small and large commercial aircraft for overnight and/or multiday trips.
