The Heavy Duty Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy construction vehicles and equipment. The Heavy Duty Mechanic reports directly to the Fleet Shop Foreman and Lead mechanic.


  • Inspect heavy vehicles and equipment to diagnose malfunctions.
  • Repair heavy construction vehicles and equipment such as bulldozers, cranes, front-end loaders, motor graders, tractor-trailers, water trucks, and other heavy equipment.
  • Adjust, repair, and replace engines, fuel systems, hydraulic and electrical systems, brakes, suspension, steering and transmissions.
  • Disassemble and assemble vehicles and equipment parts using hoists, hand tools, pneumatic and electric tools and instruments.
  • Perform routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including lubrication and oil changes in accordance with maintenance schedules.
  • Operate vehicles and equipment to diagnose and ensure operating efficiency.
  • Clean and maintain equipment, tools, and the general work area.
  • Prepare and maintain inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Comply with Company and customer policies and procedures.
  • Support AES zero-incident safety culture and assume personal accountability and responsibility for safe work practices in all projects, activities, and operations.

High school diploma or GED with a minimum of five (5) years related training and experience required. Troubleshooting and repair experience with power train, hydraulic, air and electrical systems required. 

Additional Experience Requirements
Experience must include knowledge and craft skills to maintain, service, troubleshoot and repair equipment to include but not limited to:  Kenworth and Western Star Tractors, Link belt, Grove Cranes (50 Ton to 150 Ton), Cat D-9 dozers, excavators, 14&16H blades and vibratory compactors, Genie manlifts, Westmark crude / diesel tankers, Westmark 325bbl. Vac. Trailers and Volvo L-70 to L-220 loaders. Candidate needs to have experience in using Cat, Volvo, Cummins, John Deere, and Detroit diagnostic troubleshooting programs. 

Preferred Experience Requirements
Experience in the oil and gas industry and in the arctic environment preferred. Ten or more years repairing Cat, Cummins, John Deere, Volvo, Detroit and Kubota engines, Cat, Volvo, Genie, Link belt, Kenworth and heavy equipment preferred. Any Dealership experience or Vocational Training is highly desirable.

North Slope Training Cooperative certification and a minimum of a valid class B driver’s license or higher required. Current US DOT medical card required.

A candidate must be able to meet the following non-exclusive requirements:                                                               

  • Meet the AES Driving Records and Motor Vehicle Use Policy.
  • Take and pass a pre-employment drug test which may include both UA and hair testing.                         
  • Meet the physical requirements of this position including working in a remote location under arctic conditions.
  • Required to take and pass a Fit-For-Duty Exam.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an access badge for the work location.

The availability of this position is contingent upon the Company’s continued operational needs once training is completed.
