The Equipment Operator is to operate Eskimo’s Inc. vehicles with a capacity up to 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW). This position will require one to work in extreme weather conditions escorting vehicle convoys on the Community Winter Access Trail.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (and other duties as assigned)
- Check conditions of CWAT to ensure safe transport and compliance with permit requirements.
- Check vehicles to ensure that mechanical, safety, and emergency equipment is in good working order and compliant with CWAT stipulations.
- Follow appropriate safety procedures for driving and transporting.
- Inspect loads to ensure that cargo is secure.
- Maintain logs of working hours or of vehicle service and repair status, following applicable state and federal regulations.
- Report vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violation, or damage to the vehicles.
- Drive vehicles with capacities greater than 3 tons, including Tucker Sno-Cats to escort civilian vehicle convoys.
- Check all load-related documentation for completeness and accuracy.
- Perform basic vehicle maintenance tasks, such as adding oil, fuel, or radiator fluid or performing minor repairs.
- Operate equipment, such as vehicle cab computers, VHF radios, Satellite phones, telephones, global positions systems (GPS) equipment to exchange necessary information with bases, supervisors, and other drivers.
- Plan or adjust route based on adjustments due to changing condition using navigation devices and outlined procedures with prior approval from Eskimos Inc. Project Manager.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Strong knowledge, understanding and sensitivity to the Inupiat culture.
- Valid Driver License required. Commercial Driver License preferred.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Ten years Arctic experience required.
- The ability to speak and understand the Inupiaq language is important and preferred.
