The Assistant Controller assists the Controller in preparing and reporting financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and regulatory requirements. Manages and assists with all month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing responsibilities while ensuring timely and accurate closing of the ledgers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (and other duties as assigned)

Assist in the preparation and review of month end closing entries to allow a timely month-end closing process to meet reporting deadlines, to include:

  1. Supervise Accounts Payable Supervisor. Oversee and provide guidance to Accounts Payable Supervisor during month-end closing, year-end closing and the financial reporting process the accounts payable module.
  2. Supervise General Ledger staff and provide guidance to all direct reports.  
  3. Responsible for C-Store and Lubricant accounting functions.
  4. Prepare and review monthly accounts reconciliations.
  5. Prepare and review general ledger journal entries to verify documentation accuracy.
  6. Prepare audit schedules and provide support during interim and year-end external audit process. Collaborate with internal audit as needed.
  7. Routinely monitor processes to improve internal controls and efficiencies.
  8. Provide effective leadership to include training and mentoring of accounting staff to meet objectives and goals of the Accounting Department. Ensure accountability within the accounting teams.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Carry out managerial responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Supervise all employees within the department. Responsibilities include: interviewing, hiring, disciplining, coaching and training, addressing and resolving employee concerns, planning, assigning, directing work and assessing job performance.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in related field required; major in Accounting preferred
  2. 2 years fuel industry experience preferred
  3. CPA or CPA Candidate preferred with either 2 year Public Accounting Experience or 5 years of Progressive General Ledger Experience

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees or customers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

The work environment is in a busy office setting.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and may be required to travel in small and large commercial aircraft.
