Our Valdez Refinery, operating since 1993, is the newest refinery in the U.S.  Today the refinery processes 60,000 bbl/day producing ultralow sulfur diesel, heating fuel and jet fuels for Alaska’s South Central and South West regions.

Refinery Electrical & Instrument Technician is an hourly position that maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, and installs different types of instrumentation and electrical equipment throughout the refinery.  The E&I Technician functions in a team environment and must also be able to work independently, as needed.  Typical shifts are 14 days on and 14 days off, 12 hours each day, but can vary based on needs; must be willing to work overtime, as well as be willing to be on-call and meet call-out standards to respond to site responsibilities and emergencies.  This is a safety sensitive position.  Candidates must demonstrate personal commitment to incident and injury free operations with a proven track record in safety and reliability.  Must work outside in inclement weather in compact and tight spaces.  E&I Technician reports directly to the E&I Lead.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (and other duties as assigned)

  1. Perform and document maintenance, calibration, installation, fault diagnosis, and repair of electronic, mechanical and pneumatic instruments and systems.
  2. Perform and document maintenance, calibration, installation, repair, and fault diagnosis of solid state and microprocessor based control equipment including plant communications equipment, distributed control system (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC) and burner management systems.
  3. Maintain DCS system at a high level of operability and reliability.
  4. Install maintain and repair advanced electrical equipment such as variable speed motor drives, UPS /Battery charging systems, and power/control system relays.
  5. Work with a wide variety of instruments including pH, conductivity, ultrasonic, guided wave radar, mass flow, pressure transducers, RTDs, etc.
  6. Maintain files, logs and drawings for all designated instrumentation and electrical equipment.
  7. Maintain instrumentation and electrical spare parts inventory to preserve plant reliability.
  8. Understand Piping and Instrument Diagrams, Signal Flow Diagrams, Wiring Diagrams, Panel Drawings, One‐Line Drawings, Loop Sheets, and Wire Lists.
  9. Perform all duties in manner consistent with environmental, health and safety policies.
  10. Identify opportunities to increase efficiency and reduce costs and communicate them to the Electrical & Instrumentation Lead.
  11. Build positive working relationships with operators and other crafts, both internally and externally to Petro Star.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  1. High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  2. Valid Driver's License.
  3. Must have a proven safety record and be familiar with OSHA requirements for the trade.
  4. Ability to display a comprehensive understanding of refinery policies and procedures.
  5. 3 years of Journeyman level instrumentation experience.
  6. Demonstrated proficiency troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining Instrument control systems and their associated components.
  7. Demonstrated proficiency in the physics of Instrumentation.
  8. Demonstrated basic understanding of networking, and process technology.
  9. Ability to configure and implement discrete controllers.
  10. Ability to calibrate pneumatic, electronic, and digital instrumentation.
  11. Associates of Science, Certificate of Achievement, Certificate of Accomplishment from an accredited / approved program in the following field: Instrumentation.
  12. Must be able to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
  13. Experience troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining industrial automation systems.
  14. Hands-on experience with current control strategies and technologies such as PLCs and DCSs.
  15. Understanding of basics of various communications bus technologies (such as Fieldbus).
  16. Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS) experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees or customers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
